Meet Casper. This adorable Yorkie mix with the fluffy snow white coat was surrendered to the rescue with his brother Lucas. They are the same age, have the same parents, and are the product of an "accidental" second litter. Their owners have an unaltered male Yorkie and an unaltered female Rat Terrier in their home, and for the second time.surprise!...puppies happened. We promised to find both pups a great home and convinced their owners to get both family dogs altered so this will never happen again.
Casper has been in his foster home for three weeks now living with two large dogs and a small dog, and his foster mom, Georgette, pet-sits part-time. We checked in with Georgette for an update to see how Casper was settling in:
How is he doing with your pack? Was it an easy integration?
Casper gets along with large, small, and super large dogs, and any dog that comes into the house is his friend immediately. He does have a loud bark when he sees dogs (or people) further up the street or walking by when he is in the yard. We are working on that.
Do you think he would do better in a home with dogs, or fine as an only dog too?
I think he would do best with an established, social dog buddy in the home to learn from and play with. He would be ok without another pet if he has a family with a lot of time to spend, but he would need some scheduled playtime with other dogs to keep up his social skills.
Would you say he's an active, moderate energy, or a more mellow dog?
I think he has a moderate energy level, and he chills out fine when we go to work. He enjoys walks and likes to chase toys but is pretty calm in the house. He goes on 2-3 walks a day.
Leash walking skills? Do you walk him regularly for exercise or potty?
He walks well on a leash in terms of not pulling, but needs work on his barking at people and other dogs. I have tried walking him solo, walking him with my small dogs, and with my big dogs. He barks the least when he's with my big dogs. In just the two weeks I have had him, the barking has already reduced and he is listening when I tell him to stop. He needs practice and someone who is willing to work with him.
Personality?
He can be shy with people at first, but he's definitely very snuggly once he knows you. He is a hoarder...the dogs take toys out to play. When they drop the toy he sneaks over, grabs it and runs to the large dog bed in the corner. It is hilarious!
House trained? Crate trained?
He is crate trained and often goes into the crate to take a nap on his own. He has had a couple accidents since he arrived and I think he may have been trained on a pee pad in his prior home. This week he is doing better letting me know when he wants to go out and is taking advantage of the yard breaks throughout the day. I think he'll be fine with a consistent routine and regular breaks. He's doing much better.
Does he greet new people and visitors well?
After he barks he does well...LOL
******
We think Casper would do best in a home in quiet vs. urban community and would benefitf from a calm, established dog in the home to learn from and help build his confidence. He could do fine as only dog too, but would need his family to commit to his continued socialization with other dogs.
We are looking for an adopter who is ready to work with him to get him more comforable on leash.
