Seal was found stray and taken to a shelter. She is about 2 yrs of age, 12 lbs, joyful with a puppy-like enthusiasm and is simply adorable. Seal has a classic dachshund body and whip tail but it’s her face that melts hearts, with her wrinkled brow and toothy grin. Despite being clinically blind, Seal navigates her foster home remarkably well, bumping into only the other dogs when they move around. She navigates stairs like a pro, feeling their depth by reaching out with her paws and knows key words so her people can assist with voice instructions. Seal must be able to trust her people to give her accurate instructions, putting her welfare and safety first so that she can enjoy a sense of freedom. She is loyal, loving, very cuddly, playful, extremely food oriented (will leap and spin in the kitchen at meal times), gets the zoomies. She is best suited to life in a fully detached house as she barks to alert if she hears new (scary) noises or smells something disturbing like smoke. In foster she has discovered dog beds, toys, playing with the other dogs, and sleeping in the big bed cuddled up all night with her person. Seal’s ideal home would be with calm, nurturing people who can intuit life as a blind dog, in a house (not in an apartment, condo or townhome) with a secure and safe outdoor area with no (or safe) stairs so that she can roam and scamper off-leash. Seal would be fine as the only pet in the home with people who are home most of the time. A mellow dog tolerant of being bumped into would be good with careful monitoring or separation at meal and treat times. Dog friendly cats would also be good (can’t risk Seal being swatted in the face by an intolerant cat). Older teens who can provide consistency in safety and instructions also okay. She is not a huge fan of car rides but does well in her booster seat (her safe place in the car). She enjoys quiet neighborhood walks and is enjoying outings to new places but may need to be carried at times. She is house trained to pee pads but will go when taken outside, she may have accidents initially until she learns where she needs to go. You could not ask for a more loving or loyal companion. She is utterly devoted to her people. Please note that we are currently set up to adopt within the Los Angeles county area.
