PATRICK: 2 years old, Jack Russell Terrier Mix, 10.6lbs, Neutered Male
Please Note: We can not guarantee breed mix. It is an educated guess.
Home Recommendation: Doing great in the city. Could live in the city or out in the burbs. Needs a medium active home, lifestyle. Not bouncing off the walls with energy but a few good walks a day are important. A good fit for an adopter that doesn't have a ton of dog experience.
What Is a terrier: There are many kinds of terriers, and they were originally bred to hunt vermin. The name originates from the Latin word terra, meaning earth or soil -- makes sense for a pup digging for animals like rats. Terriers are known for being smart and fearless. They are great for active families and for families that enjoy teaching tricks to their pups.
What does owning this dog entail?: Don't let their size fool you, terriers can be all dog and then some. This dog is considered a working breed since their original purpose was to do a job. It's going to be very important to keep this pup busy both physically and mentally -- that includes a minimum of 60 to 90 minutes of outdoor time every day. A perfect small sized walking, and hiking buddy. We strongly recommend a basic training course to get a more solid feel for this pup's individual needs and how to best communicate with each other. A well trained dog is a happy dog. Terriers make great dogs for owners who are interested in teaching their dog some agility or attending agility classes. They're generally not awesome matches for homes with pets like hamsters or mice.
Personality: Can be a little shy at first. Once comfortable makes a great buddy and even a better cuddle partner.
His Foster Dad Says: " While it's only been two days, Patrick has been an absolute joy and as time goes on he is just getting more comfortable with me. When leaving the pickup site he was really hesitant to walk and I carried him for a while. Now, he is a champion walker, always staying close but walks everywhere. On walks he is calm and respectful of others. He does not like the basement doors in front of apartments/restaurants, he refuses to walk over them. The city is a big new place for him with lots of sounds. Big sounds like garbage trucks or construction he'll be sure to walk away from. Just this morning he started playing with toys and jumping around wagging his tail in excitement. He slept through the night in a bundle of blankets on my bed and waited to go to the bathroom until his morning walk. He very clearly just wants to be loved and to have a secure home. I'm sure with time he will get better at time alone but right now he really does not like it."
House Trained: Yes! Does all the business outside.
Separation Anxiety & Leash Manners: Working on being left home alone, will cry for a bit but non destructive. Great on leash, stays close to foster parent!
Good With Other Dogs: Totally fine walking by other dogs. Not super interested in saying hi but is very polite. Could totally live with another dog similar in energy to him.
Good with Cats: Has not been cat tested. Most likely compatible with a cat - based on demeanor.
Good with Kids: Okay for a home with older respectful children - 12 years and up.
Medical Status: Neutered and microchipped. Up to date on vaccines. Treated with de-wormer and heartworm prevention upon intake.
How Did They End Up With Social Tees: Left at a high volume shelter in TN. High volume shelters are often forced to euthanize in order to make room for dogs that come in. Our rescue partner pulled them, had them vetted and transported to NYC. While in Social Tees care they are kept in attentive and loving foster homes. Many dogs are rescued from TN due to the lack of Spay and Neuter and a much smaller population of humans seeking dogs. In NYC we have a large human population which in turn means they find forever homes :)
