JOLLIE: 8.5 weeks and 5lbs (as of 10/2/21), Heeler Mix, Spayed Female, High Active - Estimated to Be About 35lbs Full Grown
Please Note: We can not guarantee full grown size nor breed mix. Both are educated guesses.
Home Recommendation: A high active household that is ready to take on the joys (and lots of hard work) of raising a puppy. They are working breed puppies so they are wicked smart and will need lots of stimulation and exercise as they grow into young adults. This breed mix requires an owner with some working breed primary dog ownership. Sorry to disappoint but if your dog experience stops at "grew up with a dog", then these babies are not a good match for you. We ask that thier adopters have experinece with working breed dogs.
What is a Heeler?: The Heeler is also known as the Australian Cattle Dog. They were originally bred for moving cattle over long distances. It's an energetic and intelligent dog designed to do lots of physical activity and complete tasks almost all day. This dog does really well with structured training and learns fast but can be a handful if not getting enough physical and mental exercise. It gets the name "heeler" because it nips at the heels of cattle to herd them, so they are often not great pets for homes with small children because their instincts sometimes kick in and cause them to "herd" the kids. They generally thrive outside of urban environments, but in the city those on the chiller end of the spectrum make great walking buddies and would excel at agility classes.
What does owning this dog entail?: Lots of exercise and mental stimulation is a must. This dog is considered a working breed since their original purpose was to do a job. It's going to be very important to keep this pup busy both physically and mentally -- that includes a minimum of 90 minutes of outdoor time every day for this high energy dog. A perfect walking, hiking, and running buddy. We strongly recommend a basic training course to get a more solid feel for this pup's individual needs and how to best communicate with each other. A well trained dog is a happy dog.
Personality: Puppies this young are pretty similar to one another. Think lots of energy, equal amounts of napping. A zest for human connection and the potential to be incredible dogs with lots of training, routine and guidance. Puppies are incredibly loving and sweet. They just need lots of help learning how to be good boys and girls.
House Trained: These little nuggets have just started thier vaccine series so they are relying on pee pads at the moment. With puppies it's important to be ready for lots of clean up on aisle PEE. Consistency, praise and patience are the ingredients to house training puppies. If you are lucky enough to own a backyard, it's safe for them to use it for potty breaks.
Good With Other Dogs: Yes! These nuggets are cleared to interact with healthy adult dogs but shouldn't be going on playdates with other puppies (they need a few more vaccine boosters before they are allowed to do that). Socialization with other dogs is a huge part of raising a puppy. They have all of the potential to be amazing with other dogs ... the ball is in your court.
Good with Cats: Yes! Fun fact: all puppies are good with cats. It's up to the owner to teach their puppy to not chase the cat and to respect the cat's boundaries. If you own a cat and want to add a puppy into the mix it's very important that your cat has met a dog before and was comfortable around it. You don't want to ruin your cat's life by adding a dog, no one wants to live with a grumpy cat.
Good with Kids: 10 years old and up. This breed mix is known to go through a very intense teething stage so not a good match for a home with young kids. This breed was also bred to nip the heels of livestock so for sure not a good match for homes with young kids.
Medical Status: Spayed and microchipped. Up to date on vaccines for their age. Adopters will need to finish DHPP Vaccine series and get the Rabies Vaccine at 16 weeks of age. These puppies have been treated with dewormer.
How Did They End Up With Social Tees: There are 3 puppies in the J litter. They were left at a high volume shelter in TN. High volume shelters are often forced to euthanize in order to make room for dogs that come in. Our rescue partner pulled them, had them vetted and transported to NYC. While in Social Tees care they are kept in attentive and loving foster homes. Many dogs are rescued from TN due to the lack of Spay and Neuter and a much smaller population of humans seeking dogs. In NYC we have a large human population which in turn means they find forever homes :)
