Astro Boy is a 3 year old, 32 lb spaniel mix. He is house trained, neutered, up to date on vaccines and microchipped. Astro is super smart, in fact too smart for his own good. The early years of his life was fraught with lots of mixed signals and he's picked up some annoying habits. Thus we've had Astro in training camp at Instinct in Englewood and he has been a teacher's pet ever since. He's got the basics down for sure: sit, come, stay and he's also been learning impulse control, leave it, and looking at his handler for direction versus him taking charge.
Astro sometimes thinks the rules are up for debate," and he's a "spunky dog with lots of opinions, but he'll make you laugh because he definitely has a sense of humor." He is looking for an adopter who gets him; someone who:
1. is comfortable giving him clear direction, i.e. no mixed signals or gray areas
2. is patient, but also confident and kind (confident meaning not intimidated easily, not pushy or controlling or the like)
3. has time to practice training and mental stimulation games because he's super intelligent
He could be the kind of dog that would excel in obedience classes and would probably really like something like Rally Obedience - he really, really loves to work and train. His trainer would love an experienced home but it doesn't necessarily need to be someone who's had a really challenging dog before - as long as they are willing to put work in in order to reap the benefits. A less experienced home would work, as long as they were willing to keep training - ultimately, Astro is a very "operant" dog, so he learns quickly and is super smart, someone who's had normal dogs before but really "get it" in terms of rewarding the right behaviors would work really nicely for him.
